Hello everyone, I'm truly grateful to the Steel Drum Committee for offering such a valuable platform where we can exchange ideas with industry leaders and professionals in packaging and barrel manufacturing. Today, I’d like to introduce our latest product: the weld repair coating for our 89 series steel drums. This coating has been developed to meet the evolving needs of the market and improve performance in various applications.

Let me take you back to January 1989 when the first special grease-resistant coating for steel drums used in printing inks was successfully developed at Shanghai Xugong Coating Technology Co., Ltd. Named X-891 after the founder, Mr. Xu Guoxing, this coating marked the beginning of a new era in steel drum technology. After several years of research, it was patented under the number ZL 01 2 45930.5, becoming a unique solution for domestic steel drum coatings.

The X-891 coating is a two-component system that cures at room temperature without the need for baking. It combines the best features of epoxy, PVF, phenolic, polyurethane, polyester, and amino alkyd coatings, making it ideal for the specific requirements of steel drum manufacturing. Over a decade of use has proven its excellent oil and chemical resistance, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. It’s now widely used for both inner and outer coatings of open and electrogalvanized steel drums.

The X-891 coating is a two-part, room-temperature curing system. It forms a dense network through an addition and crosslinking reaction between the two components, resulting in minimal shrinkage and superior corrosion resistance. It's mainly used in three key areas:

1. For the inner coating of open steel drums, it offers high transparency, gloss, and durability. The X891-1 clear coating gives the interior a mirror-like finish, even in humid and corrosive environments. It has been successfully applied in national ink printing drums and protective chemical barrels.

2. For the outer surface of steel drums, especially those exposed to corrosive chemicals, X-891 significantly enhances the appearance and corrosion resistance. It prevents peeling and damage caused by splashing liquids, as seen in applications like German Henkel surfactant packaging.

3. As a weld coating for electrogalvanized and hot-dip galvanized steel drums, X-891 improves oxidation resistance and aesthetics. It provides a smooth, bright finish and is easy to apply in thin layers, reducing material usage and production costs.

With growing environmental awareness, electro-galvanized drums are being replaced by hot-dip galvanized ones. However, welding remains a challenge. While X-891 has been used on welds, it wasn’t specifically designed for that purpose. To address this, Xugong Coating Technology (Yantai) Co., Ltd. developed X-895 (transparent), X-896 (silver), and X-897 (hot-melt) weld coatings based on X-891, enhancing solid content, adhesion, and corrosion resistance while maintaining room-temperature curing.

Weld Seam Coating

X-895 is a transparent EPU weld coating, currently the only one produced in China for steel barrel seams. X-896 is a silver version, matching the color of galvanized steel and providing a more natural look. X-897 is a hot-melt coating that is applied immediately after welding, ensuring even coverage and strong chemical resistance.

These coatings are two-component systems that require mixing in a 1:1 ratio. They should be used within four hours after mixing and require proper cleaning of tools to avoid curing issues. Component B must be stored in a cool, dry, and dark place to maintain quality.

The curing process involves a direct addition reaction, which produces no by-products and results in a dense, compact film. At room temperature, X-891 fully cures in seven days, while X-895 and X-896 take about four days. If baked at 180°C for 15 minutes, they cure instantly. This makes them ideal for industrial settings where time and efficiency matter.

The development of specialized weld coatings has significantly advanced steel drum coating technology in China. Globally, there is a push toward eco-friendly solutions, including color printing and laminating techniques. China is actively developing these technologies, and our products are part of this progress.

Specialized weld seam coatings are essential for future steel drum production. They are not only used for galvanized drums but also for color-coated and coated steel drums. As a new technology, product, and process, they lead the way in environmentally sustainable steel drum development.

This high-tech ingredient, based on the principle of bionics, is synthesised from a sugar called xylose that activates mucopolysaccharides (GAGs). There is a large amount of mucopolysaccharides present between the extracellular matrix (ECM) of our skin, most of which are glycopolymers (GAGs) made up of glucuronic acid and amyloxyglycans, and these mucopolysaccharides, which play a very important role for the skin, as they absorb moisture and play a role in preventing the skin's moisture from dissipating. Also due to the fact that mucopolysaccharides absorb a lot of water, they are able to form a structure that can be imagined as a colloid made up of water. At the same time, the water-absorbing capacity of the molecular structure of these proteins, mucopolysaccharides GAGs, makes the matrix mesh structure more elastic, thus helping to improve cellular firmness and skin elasticity. These are important factors that affect the elasticity and texture of the skin.
