Hello everyone, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to the Steel Bar Committee for offering this great platform where we can exchange ideas with industry leaders in packaging and barrel manufacturing. Today, I’m excited to introduce a product that has been at the core of our innovation—our 89 series steel drum weld repair coating.

Let me take you back to January 1989, when the first special grease-resistant coating for steel drums was developed in Shanghai Xugong Coating Technology Co., Ltd. This coating, named X-891, was created based on the expertise of Mr. Xu Guoxing, and it marked the beginning of our journey in steel drum coatings. After several years of development, we successfully obtained a patent for this product with the number ZL 01 2 45930.5, making it one of the most unique coatings in China’s steel drum industry.

The X-891 coating is a new generation of protective layer designed by combining the corrosion resistance of epoxy, PVF, phenolic, polyurethane, polyester, and amino alkyd coatings. It was specifically tailored for the manufacturing and usage conditions of steel drums. Over a decade of use has shown that this coating offers excellent oil and chemical resistance. One of its key advantages is that it cures at room temperature without requiring baking, making it more versatile and cost-effective for steel drum manufacturers. It has since been widely used for inner coatings of open steel drums and outer coatings of electrogalvanized steel drums.

The X-891 coating is a two-component system that forms a film through an addition and crosslinking reaction between the two components. This reaction occurs at room temperature or under low heat, and it doesn’t produce any byproducts, resulting in minimal shrinkage and a dense, compact coating with superior corrosion resistance. Its applications include:

1. Inner coating for open steel drums: The clear version of X-891 offers high transparency and gloss, while the white version mimics the look and feel of ceramic tiles. It's especially popular for large-mouth steel drums made from cold-rolled sheets, as it creates a mirror-like finish that remains bright even in humid or corrosive environments. This coating has been successfully applied in national ink printing steel drums and chemical protective barrels.

2. Outer coating for steel drums: When corrosive chemicals are involved, the surface of the steel drum can get splashed, leading to paint damage. By applying X-891 on top of the existing paint, the appearance becomes brighter and the corrosion resistance significantly improved. For example, it has been used on the outer layers of packaging barrels for German Henkel surfactants.

3. Weld coating for electro-galvanized and hot-dip galvanized steel drums: X-891 improves the oxidation and corrosion resistance of the weld area, enhances the appearance, and dries quickly. It’s available in transparent and silver versions, and is ideal for weld coatings.

Weld Seam Coating

As environmental awareness grows, electro-galvanized steel drums are being replaced by hot-dip galvanized ones, but welding issues remain a challenge. To address this, Xugong Coating Technology (Yantai) Co., Ltd. developed X-895 (transparent), X-896 (silver), and X-897 (hot-melt) weld coatings. These were based on the X-891 formula, with enhanced solid content, better adhesion, and improved resistance to water, oil, solvents, and corrosion.

X-895 is a transparent EPU weld coating, currently the only one produced in China for steel barrel welds. X-896 is a silver version that closely matches the color of galvanized sheets, giving the weld a natural, seamless look. X-897 is a hot-melt coating applied directly after welding, which melts instantly and covers the seam evenly. However, care should be taken to avoid marks on corrugated areas.

X-891, X-895, and X-896 are two-component coatings that cure at room temperature. They should be mixed in a 1:1 ratio, left to rest for 10 minutes, and then applied via spray or brush within four hours. Proper storage of component B is essential to maintain quality. The curing process is a direct addition reaction, ensuring minimal shrinkage and excellent adhesion. At higher temperatures, curing is faster, but below 10°C, it may take up to seven days to fully cure.

The development of specialized weld coatings has revolutionized steel drum coating technology in China. Globally, there's a growing focus on eco-friendly solutions, such as color printing and laminating, which are becoming increasingly popular. In China, these technologies are also on the rise.

Special weld seam coatings are not only suitable for galvanized steel drums but also for color-coated and coated steel drums. They are essential for future steel drum production and represent a key step in improving the overall process. This is a new technology, product, and process that supports sustainable development in the steel drum industry.

Our product introduction and process parameters have been supported by various companies. I would like to thank them for their support. If there are any inaccuracies, please feel free to point them out. For any unresolved issues regarding the application of weld seam coatings, don’t hesitate to contact us. Thank you all for your attention.

Chiral Amino Acids

D-amino acids were discovered by scientists in humans in the 1970s, but were not extensively studied until the late 1980s. Although the unnatural D-type amino acids are not the basic structural units that make up proteins, D-amino acids are found in many plants, microorganisms and higher plants.
