Why are furniture companies not willing to "squat" old?
In today's rapidly aging society, the demand for elderly-friendly home products is expected to grow significantly. However, after visiting several major furniture stores in Beijing, I found that truly suitable options for the elderly are still rare. Even some sales staff lack basic knowledge about the specific needs of older adults.
At a well-known furniture store, a sales representative mentioned that most furniture on the market is designed for general use, with very few models specifically tailored for the elderly. In contrast, there are many children’s furniture options available. According to the staff, if you're looking for something for the elderly, it's better to focus on materials and designs already on the market. There's no need to purchase special elderly models. For example, when buying beds or sofas, choosing a firm material can be ideal. Coffee tables and cabinets often have rounded edges, making them safe and functional for older users.
When I asked, “Do you have any furniture designed for the elderly?†the response from multiple salespeople was similar: “We don’t have dedicated elderly furniture, but we do have various styles that can be used by seniors.†They suggested things like “this black-colored furniture is suitable for the elderly†or “this mattress is very comfortable for older people.â€
I noticed that while the variety of household products is extensive — from large walk-in closets to small taps and panels — these are mostly aimed at high-end, middle, or budget-conscious consumers. There are even specialized products like children’s furniture, women’s toilets with washing functions, and office fitness tools, but nothing specifically for the elderly.
According to Mr. Xu, a furniture company manager in Beijing, the reason behind this gap is that although the elderly market has potential, actual consumer demand is low and hasn't reached a significant scale. This leads to high development costs and little interest from companies. Compared to younger generations, the elderly tend to be more frugal and reluctant to spend on such products, and they often don’t want their children to buy them either. This makes it challenging for elderly-friendly products to find a market.
Mr. Xu shared that his company once introduced an elderly-friendly bedside table with LED lighting for nighttime use and extra drawers for storage. However, sales were disappointing. Additionally, there are no specific standards for elderly furniture, unlike children’s products. For a long time, adult furniture has covered the needs of the elderly, which has reduced the incentive for companies to invest in this niche market.
The lack of elderly-focused home products isn’t due to a lack of demand, but rather a lack of industry guidance. With the home furnishings market facing slow growth, companies could seize the opportunity to create brands targeting the elderly and develop suitable products. This not only fills a market gap but also opens up new development opportunities.
Although the elderly home market is still in its early stages, it’s clear that as the population ages, awareness and demand for such products will continue to rise. It's time for the industry to take notice and start developing solutions that meet the unique needs of older adults.
