Scientists from Xinjiang, China, have discovered and isolated a high-radiation-resistant fungus and an actinomycete for the first time in the world. There are two more high-radiation-resistant members in the earth's microbial family.

Since 2003, the Institute of Microbiology Application of Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, has conducted research on radiation-tolerant microbial resources in highly radioactively contaminated soil in Xinjiang. At the end of last year, we finally obtained all kinds of bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi (including yeast) resistant to 10,000-30,000 Gray radiation, and initially determined 1 new family of radiation-resistant microorganisms, 10 new genera, and more than 20 new species. Among them, radiation-resistant actinomycetes and radiation-resistant fungi were first discovered and isolated in the world.

Shi Yuhu believes that the greatest significance of the discovery of radiation-resistant fungi is to achieve a leap from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. "This provides a scientific basis for exploring the origin and evolution of life of radiation-resistant microorganisms, and also provides a new explanation for the impact of world climate change on organisms." In addition, these microorganisms, as active participants in the ecosystem, play an irreplaceable and important role in environmental restoration and maintaining ecosystem balance. As the radiation-resistant fungus has super radiation resistance, it will provide a viable way for the remediation and treatment of polluted environments, the safe disposal of nuclear power plants and nuclear waste, aerospace applications, agricultural and medical new product development, etc.
