Swaziland: Sets up waste glass bottles for crafts

Can abandoned glass bottles not only be sent to the garbage dump and be destroyed, but also be able to exert other residual heat in life? The practice of a glass factory in Swaziland in the southeastern African country is very worth learning. They specialize in collecting discarded glass bottles, turning them into valuables and making them into exquisite glass products.

It is hard to imagine that in front of these dirty, old glass bottles that have been thrown aside can turn into beautiful glass works of art. At the Nguinja glass factory, you can see for yourself the magical process of artisanization.

The Ngwenhagen glass factory was founded in the late 1970s and more than 70 craftsmen have divisions of labor. Discarded glass bottles collected from restaurants, hotels, and garbage dumps have been cleaned and crushed into thousands of degrees in a melting furnace. Later, craftsmen blow glass embryos into containers of various shapes. Experienced craftsmen can also blow glass embryos into a variety of lifelike animal shapes.

The rich Swazi-inspired art has attracted many foreign tourists. In the factory's special shop, visitors can choose from a variety of fancy and interesting glass furnishings, as well as wine glasses, vases, etc., as gifts to relatives and friends.

Gary Hatter, head of the glass factory, proudly stated that “green” is their business philosophy. Not only were the waste glass bottles used in glass factories, the rainwater used to clean glass bottles, and even the newspapers that were eventually used to package finished products were also recycled waste products.

As all the raw materials are recycled, the work of the glass factory has virtually contributed to the local environmental protection.
