Switzerland finds a protein that affects hearing

There are thousands of contacts between various neurons-synapses, synapses are responsible for ensuring the exchange of information between neurons. The largest synapse shape in the hearing area of the brain that humans are currently discovering resembles a calyx, discovered by German neurologist Helder in 1893. Because of this calyx-type synapse, auditory information can be processed within a fraction of a millisecond, and information processing is much faster than most other neural circuits.

The researchers conducted experiments using experimental mouse neurons and found that if a "bone morphogenetic protein" is allowed to function, the calyx-like synapses on the neurons will swell and enlarge, speeding up the processing of auditory information. If this protein is not allowed to function, there will be many small synapses on the neurons, which will slow down the processing of auditory information.

Ralph Schnegenberger, who participated in the research, pointed out that this protein can promote the growth and development of this calyx-type synapse, which is conducive to the brain processing auditory information.
