The surface layer of the soil absorbs and stores a significant amount of solar energy, maintaining a relatively stable temperature throughout the year. This stability allows the heat pump to efficiently extract heat from the ground during colder months and reject heat back into the soil during warmer periods. The continuous heat absorption rate—also known as energy density—is generally around 2 W/m², depending on soil type and moisture content. If the area is large and the soil is not rocky, a horizontal layout is often more cost-effective. However, in areas with limited space, a vertical system is typically preferred. There are two main connection methods for the underground heat exchangers: parallel and series. In a parallel system, all the pipes connected to the same header share the same heat transfer rate, ensuring balanced performance. In contrast, a series system may result in varying heat transfer rates across different loops. When choosing between parallel and series configurations, cost considerations play a major role. Vertical systems using parallel piping tend to have smaller diameter tubes, which reduce material and antifreeze costs. Smaller pipes also lower drilling expenses. Additionally, parallel systems allow for automatic pressure balancing among each loop, improving overall efficiency and reliability. Choosing the right configuration ensures optimal performance, longevity, and cost-effectiveness for the entire ground-source heat pump system.
