Soil source heat pumps, also known as ground-source heat pumps, are systems that utilize the earth's stable temperature to provide heating and cooling. The surface layer of the soil maintains a relatively constant temperature, allowing heat pumps to efficiently extract heat from it. The selection of the buried pipe method depends on several factors such as site size, local soil composition, and excavation costs. If the available land is spacious and there is no hard rock, a horizontal system is usually more cost-effective. However, when space is limited, a vertical system is preferred. There are two main connection methods for underground heat exchangers: parallel and series. In a parallel system, all pipes connected to the same header share the same heat transfer capacity, while in a series system, each loop may have different heat transfer rates. The choice between parallel and series often comes down to cost considerations. For vertical systems, parallel-pipe configurations use smaller diameter pipes, which reduces both piping and antifreeze costs. Smaller pipes also lower drilling expenses. Additionally, parallel systems allow for automatic pressure balancing across each loop, improving overall efficiency and system performance.

When designing a ground-source heat pump system, it's important to consider not only the type of buried pipe but also the specific conditions of the installation site. Proper planning ensures optimal performance, long-term reliability, and energy efficiency. Whether using horizontal or vertical layouts, the goal is to maximize heat exchange while minimizing environmental impact and operational costs.
