Luxury furniture makes a bold statement in this mid-century home, perfect for design enthusiasts.
A couple reached out to laney la with the goal of preserving a mid-century home in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. While the house was charming, it wasn’t quite enough space for their growing family. Instead of expanding outward, they chose to reconfigure the existing spaces to create a more functional and stylish living environment.
The new office benefits from a large picture window at the base of the stairs, which brings in natural light and enhances the connection to the surrounding hillside views.
In addition to a dedicated office, they also needed a guest bedroom. To make the most of the limited space, they built a custom desk and shelf system, along with a couch that slides out to transform into a guest bed. The full-length bed is hidden behind a custom frame in another room and slides through the wall when needed. A barn door provides privacy when the space is used as a bedroom.
By installing taller doors and windows, the homeowners were able to take full advantage of the hillside views. Recessed headers helped maintain the original architectural character while improving access to the outdoors.
A rarely used linen closet was transformed into a small powder room featuring a floating vanity and a space-saving toilet. This smart renovation added both function and style to the home.
Boutique carpenter Board & Block crafted a custom walnut plywood bed with integrated nightstands for the master bedroom, along with several other bespoke pieces. Clerestory windows were installed to bring in more natural light, and new built-in storage solutions were added for extra organization.
The front door was moved three feet toward the street, and an interior hallway was removed to create a more spacious and open master suite.
