Using spectrum analyzer extension as phase noise test device

The spectrum analyzer is a general-purpose test tool that can display signals with a large dynamic range in a wide frequency range. However, the FSUP Signal Source Analyzer signal source analyzer from Rohde & Schwarz, Columbia, Maryland, surpasses the functions of traditional spectrum analyzers by including a phase noise tester. The various models available now work from 10 MHz to 8.0 GHz, 10 MHz to 26.5 GHz, or 10 MHz to 50 GHz. It combines excellent performance with quick and easy operation.

FSUP Signal Source Analyzer is built on the company ’s very successful FSU spectrum analyzer platform and includes additional phase noise measurement capabilities. It has two different operating modes: as a spectrum analyzer or as a signal source analyzer. In the latter mode, it provides phase noise measurement with a spectrum analyzer, phase noise measurement with a phase comparator, and phase noise measurement with a phase comparator and cross-correlation. FSUP can use its internal reference oscillator or an external reference source provided by the user. The instrument is a powerful oscillator testing tool with a wide measurement range for tunable oscillators, including voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) adjustment characteristics, VCO DC characteristics, VCO RF characteristics, tuning sensitivity, VCP bias, and Harmonic power test.

Various measurements provide unmatched performance and accuracy. For example, its dynamic range is as follows: the displayed average noise level (DANL) is -160dBm, and the third-order intermodulation intercept point is +25 dBm. To reliably measure the phase noise of the high-frequency oscillator, the FSUP analyzer includes a low-noise internal reference source that can provide phase noise of -134 dBc / Hz at a 10-GHz carrier frequency offset of 10 kHz, or the same carrier frequency Phase noise at -170dBc / Hz offset at 10 MHz. The spurious levels are 80dBc / 8GHz, -68 dBc / 26.5GHz, and -62 dBc / 50GHz. The optional model FSUP-B60 provides two parallel receiving paths for the FSUP analyzer to measure the phase noise through the cross-correlation between the two paths. This eliminates the inherent noise of the internal reference source and improves the dynamic range by up to 20 dB.

The FSUP Signal Source Analyzer has an RBW filter function, a 3dB bandwidth from 10 Hz to 20 MHz, and a 50-MHz broadband filter. These analyzers also include electromagnetic noise interference (EMI) filters with 6dB bandwidth at 200 Hz, 9 kHz, and 120 kHz, and fast Fourier transform (FFT) digital filters with 3dB bandwidth at 1 Hz to 30 kHz. The video (3dB) bandwidth filter is in the range of 1 Hz to 10 MHz. The frequency resolution in both measurement modes is 0.01 Hz. The FSUP analyzer can display the amplitude level from DANL to + 30dBm.

The test results are displayed on an 8.4-inch (21 cm) LCD TFT display with 800 x 600 pixel SVGA resolution. Optional functions include: 0 ~ 30dB electronic attenuation, 20dB gain preamplifier, and ports for external mixers that can extend measurement capabilities to 110GHz. The FSUP analyzer includes Ethernet (RJ45), Universal Serial Bus (USB), RS-232C serial port and GPIB interface.
