The new 1-2Tube offers a more streamlined manufacturing process and allows for greater design flexibility. This innovative product is approximately 40% lighter than traditional plastic extruded tubes, thanks to its unique injection molding technique. Developed by entrepreneur Rinze Willemsen and Corné van Baal, an expert in injection molding machines, the 1-2Tube can be produced on any standard injection molding machine.
The production of the "squeeze tube" requires only 5-6 steps, making it significantly more efficient. According to Corné van Baal, this approach could revolutionize the industry. He runs Appkuns, an injection mold company based in Oosterhout, Netherlands, and collaborated with Rinze Willemsen on this project. The idea came together quickly—just one day after their initial discussion, Rinze had the concept for the 1-2Tube.
The key innovation lies in using a single injection molding tool to create both the tube and the hinged lid in one step. On the filling line, the tube is filled from the top, and the lid is then sealed using ultrasonic technology. This method reduces material usage and simplifies the assembly process.
Rinze explained that the thinner walls of the tube and the use of a sealed lid instead of a threaded or snap-on closure contribute to the product's lightweight design. In contrast, standard extruded tubes often require extra material at the neck, which increases weight. The 1-2Tube eliminates these inefficiencies, resulting in a more sustainable and cost-effective solution.
Corné added that while single-piece injection-molded tubes exist in the market, they often come with limitations such as slower production speeds and licensing issues. Additionally, they still require assembly. The 1-2Tube, however, is made from just one piece, requiring only three main steps: injection molding, filling, and sealing. With integrated mold labeling (IML), branding can also be applied during the molding process.
To achieve competitive pricing, the team plans to use a 60-cavity tool and start with a smaller test tool for initial production. Appkuns has developed four different designs for the 1-2Tube, each offering unique advantages.
The "basic" design features a shape that differs from standard extruded tubes, as the tail becomes wider after filling and sealing. The "ecology" design includes a flat cover that saves up to 40% in material usage. The "elegant" design showcases the full potential of the 1-2Tube's flexible manufacturing process, allowing for creative shapes like cones, tilts, and asymmetries. Finally, the "special" design uses advanced injection molding techniques to combine different materials, such as polypropylene, in a single unit.
