The most commonly used rain test standard for domestically produced vehicles
Water leakage in a vehicle occurs when water enters from the outside through gaps in the body structure. To evaluate the sealing performance, manufacturers simulate rainfall conditions in testing chambers. In China, most vehicles follow the GB/T 12480-1990 standard for passenger car rainproof sealing tests and the QC/T 476-1999 standard for sealing limits. These have since been revised into the updated QC/T 476-2007 standard, which includes both the requirements and testing procedures.
According to GB/T 12480-1990, the simulated rainfall should be between 4 to 10 mm/min, with nozzle pressure ranging from 69 to 147 kPa, and the test duration is typically 15 minutes. However, in real-world applications, OEMs often increase the intensity of the test to ensure better detection of potential leaks. This is done by increasing the number of nozzles or raising the water pressure, which results in higher rainfall intensity—sometimes exceeding 100 mm/min. Nozzle pressures can go beyond 200 kPa, causing the water to be finely atomized before it hits the vehicle body.
At different stages of production, OEMs apply varying levels of testing. During the trial production phase, when manufacturing processes and equipment are still being fine-tuned, longer tests—lasting between 4 to 8 hours—are conducted to identify any potential leak points. This allows engineers to analyze the root causes of water intrusion and make necessary design or process improvements. By the time mass production begins, most design and process flaws have already been addressed. At this stage, routine rain tests are performed to detect any unexpected sealing issues that may arise during assembly or due to component inconsistencies.
