New Era of Smarter Food Safety Summit Focuses on the Crucial ‘Last Mile’: Foods Ordered Online and Delivered Directly to Consumers
Remco is proud to have participated in the FDA’s New Era of Smarter Food Safety Virtual Summit on E-Commerce, which took place from October 19 to 21. The event attracted a wide range of participants, including regulators, industry representatives, and consumer groups from around 49 countries. Attendees shared insights, asked questions, and submitted public comments to help the FDA better understand the challenges and potential solutions related to food safety within a B2C e-commerce model. This included contributing to the discussion on the FDA’s New Era of Smarter Food Safety Blueprint, specifically Core Element #3 on “Business Models and Retail Modernization.â€
According to the Partnership for Food Safety Education, there has been an over 300% increase in online ordering and grocery delivery/pickup during the pandemic, along with significant growth in meal kit sales. These trends are expected to continue even after the pandemic subsides. Key food safety risks in B2C e-commerce food delivery systems include:
- Temperature-time abuse of perishable and frozen foods
- Potential package tampering and labeling issues
- Sanitation and employee hygiene during food preparation
- Cross-contamination during delivery
The summit focused on whether an updated regulatory framework is needed to address the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving e-commerce market. Industry perspectives, consumer concerns, and international viewpoints were all taken into consideration. Representatives from Japan, Brazil, England, Wales, and Germany shared their experiences and insights on how they manage food safety in their respective B2C markets.
Dr. Andreas Keller, Director of Multi-Commodity Foods at FDA CFSAN, highlighted in his closing remarks: “The challenges we face [with B2C delivered foods] in the U.S. are similar to those faced in other countries, emphasizing the need for global collaboration and information exchange to ensure food safety.â€
The FDA has invited public comments on B2C e-commerce food delivery, with details available on Regulations.gov. Since the inception of the New Era of Smarter Food Safety Initiative, Remco has actively supported the FDA through participation in forums, discussions, and providing feedback that helps reduce foodborne illness cases in the U.S. and globally.
