How to Insulate Wooden Hutches – The Packaging Doctor

Hi Doctor,

I work at an animal rescue center specializing in small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs. Some animals stay indoors when they're unwell or weak, but others live outside in wooden hutches due to limited space and their natural habitat. With winter approaching, along with harsh rains and strong winds, we need to make these hutches a bit cozier to keep the animals warm and prevent them from getting sick.

Previously, I’ve just tied bin liners to the hutches, but they tear easily and don’t offer much protection against water or cold. Since our rescue center is self-funded, every penny counts. If you could suggest an affordable solution, it would be greatly appreciated by both me and my team.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

- Miley

Hi Miley,

Thank you for reaching out! This is a common concern we've been hearing lately—especially as temperatures drop. While small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs can handle cold weather thanks to their thick fur, their hutches often leave something to be desired in terms of comfort, especially if they're older or poorly maintained.

The ideal material for this situation would be heavy-duty polythene sheeting. Specifically, I’d recommend 120-micron-thick sheeting, which provides excellent insulation while remaining durable enough to resist tears and wind. Unlike regular plastic, this thicker version is far better at keeping moisture out and maintaining warmth inside the hutch. Plus, its center-fold design makes storage easy, and each roll is 25 meters long—more than enough to cover all your hutches!

Many people who try this sheeting find it useful for other projects too, like protecting sheds or gates. You can secure it using a hammer tacker (a type of staple gun) or nails. In terms of cost, our rolls start at £65 and go up to £81 depending on quantity. That breaks down to around £2.60 per meter, making it incredibly economical. One roll should cover everything you need, and since it’s reusable (just remove the nails and fold it away), it’ll save you money year after year.

Let us know if you have any questions about installation or sourcing—it’s always good to hear back from folks who care so much about their furry friends.

Best wishes,

- The Packaging Doctor
