It’s that special time of year again when we come together to celebrate Employee Ownership Day! This is always a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the global movement towards employee ownership and encourage businesses to share their inspiring stories.
Employee ownership can take several forms, whether it’s a decision made at the inception of the company or later down the line. At Kite Packaging, we were founded on the principle of employee ownership. Back in 2001, our Chairman Bruce McInnes, alongside the founding partners, envisioned a business where employees could truly participate in the company's growth and success. As Bruce often says, “Customer satisfaction matters so much more when you own the business.â€
We operate as a 'Direct' employee-owned business, which means that the majority of our shares are owned by our employee-partners. This gives us the unique advantage of making strategic decisions from the frontline, fostering a sense of true partnership with our colleagues, customers, and suppliers. It empowers us to act quickly and decisively, knowing that every action we take directly benefits the company and ourselves.
On the other hand, there’s also 'Indirect' employee ownership, where shares are held collectively through a trust or similar entity on behalf of employees. An excellent example of this is John Lewis, where employees (or Partners) benefit from a trust holding their shares. Some companies even combine both models, allowing for a mix of individual and collective ownership.
Employee-owned businesses are thriving across the UK, contributing significantly to the economy—about 4% of the UK’s GDP annually. Studies show that co-owned companies tend to be more successful, competitive, and sustainable. Here at Kite, we’re proud to be part of this growing movement.
Let me share some of the reasons why we absolutely love being employee-owned:
Innovation: Our team is encouraged to take full ownership of their roles and contribute to key strategic decisions. Since we’re not beholden to a board or external shareholders, we can implement changes swiftly and effectively.
Commitment: Being employee-owned means every member of our team has a vested interest in the company’s success. This results in an exceptionally low turnover rate, and many of us have been with Kite since day one!
Sustainability: A business thrives because of its people. Having employees invested in the company’s future, offering daily insights, and helping shape strategies ensures long-term stability.
Success: When employees have a stake in the business, they’re naturally more motivated to drive its success. For us, work feels like a shared mission, and everyone is dedicated to achieving our goals.
From humble beginnings in 2001, with just a handful of employees, we’ve grown to over 200 team members and achieved annual turnovers exceeding £40 million. Along the way, we’ve earned numerous accolades, including recognition from the London Stock Exchange Group, which named us one of the “Top 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain†in 2016. There’s no slowing down now!
Happy Employee Ownership Day to everyone who has supported Kite and believed in our philosophy. Together, we’re building something truly remarkable!
