Kite Packaging Expands Campus to Fuel Growth

By Gavin Ashe • Friday 16th September 2022

As part of our continuous growth strategy, Kite Packaging has unveiled a brand-new Kite Campus in Puma Park, Coventry. This expansion aims to enhance our service offerings to both clients and employees alike. The long-awaited opening took place on August 29, 2022.

Spanning nearly 190,000 square feet, the new Campus adds an impressive 190,000 square feet to our existing Coventry footprint, bringing our total capacity to 380,000 square feet. This significant increase allows us to maintain a vast inventory for our clients, ensuring stock availability remains consistent. With space for approximately 40,000 pallets, Kite customers can rest assured that their needs will always be met. Additionally, Unit 2 offers another 30,000 square feet of potential expansion as the company anticipates further growth and plans to expand its workforce in Coventry.

Before the official opening, substantial investments were made to equip the Campus with state-of-the-art technology. Wherever possible, Kite collaborated with local Midlands-based contractors to support the regional economy. The new facilities boast advanced IT infrastructure and energy-efficient machinery, including 18 new forklifts, 14 low-level order pickers, and an automated conveyor system designed to optimize warehouse operations. This system significantly reduces manual labor by transporting bulky items to a two-level mezzanine, allowing warehouse staff to focus more on fulfilling orders. Furthermore, the Campus provides ample space for Kite’s mobile packaging laboratory, which will be stationed there when not conducting client visits.

The new Campus isn’t just about improving operational efficiency; it’s also designed to create an exceptional work environment. Equipped with a modern meeting room suite, a top-notch canteen area, and a recreational space complete with a pool table and foosball, Kite has crafted a workspace that prioritizes employee satisfaction. Notably, the Campus features a unique educational facility, offering invaluable on-the-job training for employees, especially those participating in our graduate program. It also serves as a platform for client training sessions, helping them stay informed about our latest products and services.

In line with our commitment to sustainability, the Campus has been thoughtfully designed to preserve and enhance the surrounding wildlife. Walkways have been constructed, allowing employees to enjoy a peaceful break amidst nature. Plants have been strategically placed throughout the Campus, integrating natural elements into the indoor spaces and fostering a calming atmosphere that boosts creativity, productivity, and employee wellbeing. To promote healthier lifestyles, Kite has introduced a weekly fresh fruit delivery program to encourage nutritious eating habits among staff members.

The transition to the new Campus has facilitated numerous green initiatives, allowing Kite to refine its sustainability efforts. Modern insulation and smart lighting contribute to energy efficiency, while solar panels installed on both units generate renewable energy. Committed to achieving zero waste to landfill, Kite has implemented a comprehensive recycling program across the Campus. Recycling bins are conveniently located throughout the premises, promoting eco-friendly waste management practices. Additionally, Kite operates its own on-site water recycling plant for self-sufficiency. Electric vehicle charging stations have been installed, with the possibility of adding more depending on future demand. Having already achieved carbon neutrality under Scopes 1 and 2, Kite Packaging remains steadfast in its dedication to environmental stewardship at Puma Park.

Councillor Jim O’Boyle, cabinet member for jobs, regeneration, and climate change, expressed his enthusiasm: “Our team has worked closely with Kite Packaging over the years to support their growth and helped them secure suitable locations within the city. It’s inspiring to see businesses embrace greener initiatives and take advantage of the resources available.”

He continued, “We strive to assist businesses in various ways—whether it’s launching new ventures, aiding post-pandemic recovery, or helping companies expand. Attracting and nurturing businesses creates job opportunities for locals and strengthens the economy. We’re committed to providing the necessary support.”

“Thanks to this investment, Kite Packaging anticipates creating an additional 170 jobs alongside its current Coventry workforce.”

According to Gavin Ashe, Kite’s Managing Partner, “While this may seem like a new location, it’s actually where we’ve been headquartered since day one. Approximately 200 employees will now operate from the expanded site, continuing our core mission of packaging distribution. Our need for more space was driven by the growing demands of our people and clients. The move into Puma Park provides exactly what we needed—around 400,000 square feet of operational capacity.”

The new Campus stands as a testament to Kite Packaging’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and employee welfare. As we continue to grow, we remain focused on delivering excellence to our clients while contributing positively to the community and environment.
